James Cameron has become an authority on both the Titanic and deep sea exploration over the course of his filmmaking career. He joined CNN’s Anderson Cooper last night as the journalist broadcasted live from St. John’s Harbour, following the tragic conclusion of the missing Titan submersible saga this week. Yesterday, a debris field was found near the Titanic wreck site and it was confirmed to be debris from the Titan, after a “catastrophic implosion” killed all five individuals on board. The Oscar winning director, who through his work on Titanic and The Abyss became enamoured with the deepest parts of the ocean and has since become the first person to journey solo to the Challenger Deep site of the Mariana Trench, told Cooper that he was struck by the similarities between the ill-fated Titanic voyage and the Titan tragedy.

“Here’s a case … where we didn’t remember the lesson of Titanic, these guys at OceanGate didn’t, because the arrogrance and the hubris that sent that ship to its doom is exactly the same thing that sent that sub to its fate.” He said it’s heartbreaking that the situation was so preventable.
