Hugh: Photo Booths Might be Making a Comeback

In a time where so much only exists digitally, it’s nice to hold something in your hand. Maybe that’s one of the reasons photo booths seem to be making a comeback.

These booths used to punctuate malls, theatres, and basically anywhere you can find teenagers. Like the phone booth of old, these days you don’t see too many around…for now. Since pandemic restrictions lifted, studios where people can get in front of a camera have been a huge draw in South Korea. By themselves or with friends, teenagers seem to be flocking to these updated photo booths, many of which offer props to pose with.

It’s not just in South Korea, either. Makeshift phot booths are hits at events like weddings or other celebrations. Vanity Fair set one up at their Oscar party this year and several big-name celebs stepped up for their photos to be printed in front of them. Maybe it’s another passing fad, but from the whopping number of photo studios being opened on the other side of the world, it seems like Gen Z might be driving the photo booth comeback.
