A fire at St. John’s International Airport closed the facility last night and flights have still yet to resume. The terminal was evacuated around 11:30 Friday night due to a fire near the children’s play area on the second floor. Fortunately no one was injured. The airport authority says there is smoke and water damage that needs to be addressed and passengers should not visit the airport until the terminal has been safely re-opened. In the meantime, those with flights booked should contact the airlines for up-to-date information. According to NTV’s Ben Cleary, flights were originally expected to resume Saturday at 11:00PM, but a more recent update reveals that complications have resulted in flights being postponed or cancelled until 7:00PM Sunday. St. John’s International Airport Authority CEO Dennis Hogan said there is more work to be done than originally expected. The terminal building will re-open to travelers at 5:00PM tomorrow, two hours before flight operations resume. The Between the fire and the weekend snow storm, 36 flights have been impacted. The investigation into the fire is ongoing, but is not considered suspicious.
