Dating is hard, but we do it because it’s natural for us to want to find the right partner. So when it comes to finding someone we want to commit to, what are the things that turn us away? Recently, Finder conducted a survey asking Canadians what their top relationship dealbreakers are, and there are some interesting responses. It’s not exactly surprising to see a history of infidelity as the number one response, but it is a big deal that having debt ranks as the third most popular response. In fact, a potential suitor’s financial situation is so important that it comes up three times in the top ten. In addition to having debt being third on this list, having a history of gambling or bad investments ranks sixth and being unemployed is seventh. Check out the full top ten below, along with the percentage of respondents who gave that answer.

  1. History of infidelity – 36%
  2. History of drug or alcohol addiction – 33%
  3. Has substantial debt – 30%
  4. Not respectful of my needs or time – 25%
  5. Emotionally unavailable (fear of commitment) – 24%
  6. History of gambling or bad investments – 24%
  7. Being unemployed – 22%
  8. Has (physical or mental) illness that would require me to care for them – 17%
  9. Has dependent children – 16%
  10. Not willing to share household responsibilities – 14%
