Some Gen Zers are giving a thumbs down in traffic, saying it’s like receiving a real-life “dislike”.
“It’s much more impactful than giving the middle finger because it’s such a major sign of disapproval,” 28-year-old Gabrielle Deleon said. “It just hits different.”
31-year-old Brenna Sharp traded in “the finger” for a thumbs-down in 2022, and thinks it’s more effective in conveying disappointment.
Body language expert Joe Navarro said the thumbs-down indicates that someone did something wrong without being crass. It’s also a symbol commonly used on social media and text messaging apps, which means it can cause people to feel like they are being rejected IRL.
