Italians and historians alike are fuming after a tourist was filmed carving “Ivan + Hayley” into Rome’s ancient Colosseum with a set of keys. The film shows a smiling man scratching the names into a 1,937-year-old wall. Commenters have asked that the video be handed over to police so the culprit can be brought to justice. The penalty could include a fine of over a thousand dollars and up to a year in jail.
“I consider it very serious, unworthy and a sign of great incivility that a tourist defaces one of the most famous places in the world, a historical heritage such as the Colosseum, to engrave the name of his fiancée,” Italy’s Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano said. The Colosseum is considered one of the seven wonders of the modern world.
