We all know the saying ‘desperate times call for desperate measures,’ but not often does that idiom relate to eggs and potatoes. Here we are in 2023 and different factors are sending the prices of certain household items through the roof. One of the things that have risen in price the most lately are eggs, and now that Easter is upon us, people are starting to adapt. Months ago, memes were being posted to social media about people painting or hiding potatoes instead of eggs as people joked about grocery prices. Now, it seems life is imitating art as those jokes are turning into reality. Potatoes USA, an organization dedicated to promoting American potato farmers, are actually promoting Easter Potatoes as a thing. Their head of marketing is even calling the idea of painting potatoes instead of eggs “really fun” and “a great way to spend time with family.” It may sound silly, but making the swap does make some sense. As long as you use small baby potatoes, they’ll have a similar size and shape to eggs. Eggs can be a whole lot messier than raw potatoes, so you’ll make cleanup a little easier on yourself. Plus, $5 at the grocery store will get you way more potatoes than it will eggs. The hashtag #EasterPotatoes is getting attention on social media, we’ll just have to see if it ends up catching on or not.
