It is a tragic end to a tense week of extensive searching in the North Atlantic, as it is believed that the five people aboard OceanGate Expeditions’ Titan submersible “have sadly been lost” according to the organization. Earlier on Thursday, the US Coast Guard reported a debris field being found near the Titanic site and that a press conference would be held at 4:30pm NL time.

Later, reports began to emerge that the debris found belonged to the missing Titan submersible. These reports were confirmed in the press conference, as officials detailed that the totality of the pressure vessel had been found spread across several debris fields at the site. The debris was reportedly “consistent with a with catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber.”
The five individuals on board were British billionaire Hamish Harding, Pakistani nationals Shahzada Dawood and son Suleman Dawood, French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and OceanGate Expeditions co-founder Stockton Rush. Recovery efforts continue as the investigation of the debris field goes on.
