Way back in 2012, when people actually got along on social media, Twitter users in Newfoundland & Labrador came together to name some “Newfoundland bands” – that is, bands everyone knows that were Newfoundlandified by adding or changing words. Coldplay became Coldplate. Pearl Jam became Mount Pearl Jam or Pearl Jam-Jams. Laughs were had, our province’s culture celebrated.

Perhaps in a bid to escape the chaos of 2025, the OZ Mornings crew decided to take a look back at this NL social media favourite and see if some new additions can be added and Stephen, Hugh, and Shannell were pleasantly inundated with dozens of great suggestions.
Some highlights from the suggestions on the Facebook post about the topic included the George Street B’ys (Backstreet Boys) suggested by Helena, Bluestar (Lonestar) from Martina, and multiple people mentioning Taylor Swift Current. Place names, favourite brands from the past, defunct stores, and local celebs were among the inspirations for some of these hilarious NL bands.
