Justin Trudeau resigns as Prime Minister

Justin Trudeau will be stepping down as Prime Minister and as leader of the Federal Liberal Party.

Trudeau made the announcement Monday, adding he will remain on as Prime Minister until the Party chooses a new leader.

Trudeau has been facing pressure to step down for months as polling numbers have plummeted and support, even from those within his own party, has waivered.

Trudeau met with Gov. Gen. Mary Simon prior to making the announcement, asking for the prorogation of Parliament until March 24. Trudeau said Simon granted this request, adding that it brings an end to the longest session of a minority Parliament in Canadian history.
