Hugh: 50% of People Who Bought Vinyl in the Last Year Don’t Even Own a Record Player

It may seem like a parody headline, but it’s not – 50 percent of people who have bought music on vinyl in the last year don’t own a record player. Vinyl has long been the favourite way to consume music by many audiophiles, but it seems like many records that people are buying aren’t being spun at all. A recent report of entertainment trends revealed the surprising statistic and it has many scratching their heads. The research suggests that music fans are buying vinyl from their favourite artists not necessarily as a way to listen to the music, but rather as a merch item to show off their fandom. With 84% of music revenue coming from streaming, it seems like the new trend is for fans to listen to music digitally, while buying physical versions of albums as collectors items or tokens.
