More than 200 consecutive wildfires are blazing in the Northwest Territories. As a result, all 20,000 residents of Yellowknife have been ordered to evacuate. Another 360 active fires are burning in adjoining British Columbia, where conditions are expected to worsen over the next few days due to a forecast of heat and lightning.
The Canadian Red Cross has launched an appeal for relief. Those wishing to donate can do so online at www.redcross.ca or by calling 1-800-418-1111. The government of the Northwest Territories is matching donations up to $150,000 through United Way NWT. There are also other relief efforts benefiting animal welfare charities organized by Canada Helps.
