After only one season, the Newfoundland Growlers basketball team is expected to fold after the Canadian Elite Basketball League announced they are suspending operations in St. John’s. The reason for the decision is apparently all about the building they had to play in. The Growlers’ home court was at the MUN Field House, which lacked the “amenities required by a professional league,” according to the CEBL. Commissioner and co-owner of the league Mike Morreale says, “we would love to play in Newfoundland, but we need to play in a major spectator facility.” He goes on to praise the work of Deacon Sports and Entertainment, who owns the team, and their work to organize operations for last season at the last minute, and mentions the team could return under better circumstances.
