Stephen Lethbridge and Shannell Lewis chatted about this strange strategy on OZ Mornings on Friday.

The chat was inspired by a YouGov survey in the US that asked folks what they did with odd socks and how many of their socks had holes in them.

Myranda Bursey offered a statement to OZFM on this article and the response from commenters on her attire:

“I think it’s wild that given everything going on in the world right now, this video has made headlines. I do, however, think it’s a great opportunity to address some of my own, personal thoughts on the situation.

“There are definitely controversial opinions on my outfits I wear to work. I do believe that a large number of these comments come from those who may be displaced from what a school system is nowadays. For instance, majority of my colleagues dress the exact same way that I do. My clothing, and shoe choices, have been a conversation starter, time and time again with my students. It’s something that often initiates conversation and builds that rapport and connection with students, which is a huge foundation for success in any classroom.

“As mentioned, I don’t think it would cause controversy, or at least as much, if it were a male teacher in the profession OR a Phys Ed teacher. Phys Ed teachers in EVERY school I’ve ever taught at wear hoodies, sweat pants, sneakers, etc. but the fact that I teach science and still dress comfortably manages to go viral.

“People can say or talk about whatever they want, the thing that is most important to me is that I am relatable and approachable to my students. I think it instills in them that it’s not all about appearance and that you don’t have to look a certain way based on society’s standards. You don’t have to fit the ‘norm’ to be successful.

“And lastly, I understand that everyone has their own opinion. For some, it might not make sense and that’s OKAY. Times are changing and not everyone will agree with the direction we go. My only question to the opinions of others is if I were wearing heels, a dress shirt, and trousers, would my ability to teach and reach my students on their level be any different? At the end of the day, how I make my students feel and their learning experience means so much more than what individuals who have no idea what the inside of my classroom is like might think.”
