The list of things parents have to worry about is long and that list becomes even more difficult to manage on those weekends with a birthday party on the schedule. […]

The list of things parents have to worry about is long and that list becomes even more difficult to manage on those weekends with a birthday party on the schedule. If your kid is a social butterfly, this may be a common issue, or if the party is scheduled at a strange time. A post on a parenting forum from a mom with a scheduling snafu raised the following question; is 9:30am too early for a child’s birthday party? They were asking as the venue of choice only had an available opening at that time. Some respondents said that it was inconvenient timing while others said that the scheduling didn’t make much of a difference and could actually turn out to be a positive. Stephen, Hugh, and Shannell, with zero kids among them, weighed in on this from their childless perspectives on the Monday edition of OZ Mornings.

https://ozfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/bdays1.mp3

OZ listeners had their say on the OZ Line and @947OZFM on social media. Tina said that, in her opinion, a party any time before noon is a no-go, as household chores and prep time need to happen. JJ said that it takes time to get the kiddos ready so, if it’s any time before 12pm, they probably aren’t making it. Another in the 12pm camp, Misty says that 12-2pm is ideal because the kids eat lunch at the party, which means one less thing to worry about.

There is a fine line between being thrifty and being cheap. One way of life can help save an awful lot of money and is extra important while living in such uncertain financial times as these. The other can lead to frustration and sometimes actually spending more money than one intends, like if you end up opting for cheaper, low-quality options that you have to replace more often than something that maybe costs more but lasts longer.

Stephen, Hugh, and Shannell discussed different signs you can tell someone is cheap from personal finance company SoFi and how many applied to them, and also explored who the cheapest person OZFM listeners know is.

https://ozfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Cheap-1.mp3

Surprisingly, many folks told on themselves, saying that they were the cheapest person they knew. Others called out family members and may have some explaining to do at the next get-together.

https://ozfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Cheap-2.mp3

How about you? Who is the cheapest person you know? Weigh in any time by calling or texting the OZ Line, 709-576-6936, and be sure to follow along @947OZFM on social media.

FYI: the OZ Mornings crew spent some time talking acronyms this morning. That’s “for your information” if you don’t know, an example of an acronym, a kind of abbreviation that uses just the first letter of several words. USB and CD are also examples of acronyms you might be familiar with. We use them every day but how many do you actually know the meaning of? Shannell put Stephen and Hugh to the test on OZ Mornings to see how many they could get right.

https://ozfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Acronyms-1.mp3

Did you know that SCUBA is an acronym? It stands for “self-contained underwater breathing apparatus”. In fact, there are a bunch of words that are actually acronyms in disguise, as the BBC explores. RADAR is technically one, as is Laser. Hugh mentioned that sometimes even every day objects could hide acronyms, like license plates.

https://ozfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Acronyms-2.mp3

If you can think of any more tricky acronyms to quiz the OZ Mornings crew with, be sure to call or text the OZ Line, 709-576-6936, or reach out @947OZFM on social media!

Where would we be without dishwashers? Probably standing at the sink washing plates, cups, and bowls by hand because someone has to do it. Maybe at the store buying paper plates. In any case, they save us a lot of trouble and some people get even more use out of them by washing things in them besides dishes. Yes, that is allowed and some would even consider it a crafty use of a home appliance. Pots and pans in the dishwasher are pretty common. What about when you are doing some painting and want to freshen up the outlet and light switch covers to go along with your remodeled room? Those are dishwasher safe. Sick of imagining the invisible grime on your kid’s toys? Many of them are dishwasher safe as well.

https://ozfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Dishwasher-1.mp3

And that is just the tip of the iceberg, according to OZFM listeners. People weighed in, espousing the multifaceted usefulness of dishwashers, like one texter who said that they use the dishwasher to ensure their beauty supplies are clean and sanitary about once a month. Juanita mentioned vases or ornaments on the OZFM Facebook page, Jacqui says her husband cleans his baseball hats in the dishwasher, and Mary mentioned the straps of her Apple watch. It does have limits though, as one commenter said his wife told him not to clean car parts in the dishwasher again. There has to be a story behind that one.

https://ozfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Dishwasher-2.mp3

Dishwashers: far more versatile than once thought. Can you think of other dishwasher safe things that may not be actual dishes? Weigh in at @947OZFM on socials or call/text 709-576-6936!

OZ Mornings team member Hugh Campbell recently got a new car, but something important is missing: that trademark new car smell. The scent of a new vehicle is part of the fun of owning one and definitely one of the most oft-mentioned examples of a universally loved aroma, and it got Stephen, Shannell, and Hugh thinking about what their listeners’ favourite smells are. Amongst themselves, they came up with smells like book stores, barbecue, and fresh-baked bread.

OZ listeners presented a wide array of answers to the question “what’s your favourite smell,” including ski-doo engines, fresh toast, Jiggs Dinner cooking (often by a specific person like mom or nan), and camp fire. There were some more uncommon answers in the bunch too, like horse, a fresh ice rink, and as Susan pointed out, the smell from tape being used at Christmas time. Some people enjoy wrapping gifts more than others.

Who doesn’t love a feed of nachos? They’re cheesy, they’re crunchy, they’re zesty. You can put basically whatever you want on top. And you can get them pretty much anywhere. After much conversation on the topic off the mics this week, Hugh, Shannell, and Stephen brought the question on air: where do you get the best plate of nachos in the province?

https://ozfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Nachos-1.mp3

Fresh off the heels of the Downtown St. John’s Burger Battle, the morning team also talked about the possibilities of doing a similar competition with nachos as the dish of choice. Nachos are a subject of great interest to listeners of OZ Mornings apparently, as suggestions of where to find the best loaded plate started to flow in on social media. Smaller restaurants around the bay were called out, as well as downtown St. John’s eateries, familiar restaurant chains, even restaurants that aren’t immediately associated with nachos. Quite a few people also opted to tout their own nacho-making ability, saying they preferred homemade.

Each year, National Trust Canada hold the Next Great Save campaign to allow for historic sites across Canada to receive funding, amounting to $65,000 in cash prizes awarded. Last year, Our Lady of Mercy Church in Port au Port was the winner of a public vote and this year, three locations in NL are up for the $50,000 grand prize. Two sites in Labrador are in the running: Battle Harbour Marconi Towers and Dove Brook Church. On the island, St. Mark’s Heritage Church in Port de Grave is also eligible.

https://ozfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Next-Great-Save.mp3

Battle Harbour Marconi Towers are the last towers of their kind left standing in North America and were a part of Newfoundland and Labrador’s wireless network and the province’s rich history in global communications transmissions. The restoration of these towers will “strengthen community ties and provide a unique educational experience for visitors.”

Dove Brook Church is located southwest of Cartwright in Labrador, near the boundary of Akami−Uapishkᵘ−KakKasuak−Mealy Mountains National Park Reserve. It was built in 1890 by local residents and the Hudson’s Bay Company and “embodies the determination and devotion of Inuit living in Sandwich Bay, Labrador.”

St. Mark’s Heritage Church has been the subject of restoration efforts from the Port de Grave Peninsula Heritage Society, formed in 1993. It was built in 1926 on the main road passing through Bareneed, and with the grant, it would be transformed into a site for maritime history remembrance in conjunction with the Canadian Coast Guard Alumni Association.

Voting is now open at this link and closes on April 17th.

Movie fans woke up to some sad news on Wednesday, as the passing of actor Val Kilmer was announced by his daughter Mercedes. The former Batman and Top Gun star died at age 65 after a bout of pneumonia. In 2014, he was diagnosed with throat cancer, an illness he would eventually overcome. As movie fans, Stephen, Hugh, and Shannell all had fond memories to share of Kilmer’s decades-long career on the big screen.

Besides his role as Iceman in Top Gun, Kilmer was inarguably best known for playing the caped crusader in Batman Forever, alongside Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carrey, and Nicole Kidman. In fact, he was Stephen’s favourite actor to don the cape and cowl. Any time that the Dark Knight is brought up, it is inevitably followed by a debate about which actor has been the best in the role over the years. According to OZFM listeners, 80’s Batman Michael Keaton was a crowd-pleaser and Shannell’s choice, as well as the edgier Christian Bale of Batman Begins. Hugh brought up the late Kevin Conroy, who gave life to Batman in animated features and video games for the better part of three decades.

Friday morning, Shannell shared with Stephen and Hugh on OZ Mornings that a family member had called her out for doing dishes while talking on the phone, with the sound of the water and plates clinking together being called noisy. It got the team thinking about if it was impolite to multitask while on the phone with someone.

https://ozfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/multitaskingonphone.mp3

As always, OZFM listeners weighed in with their comments via the OZ Line (709-576-6936) and @947OZFM on social media. One brought up the important point that, as a cashier, it is very frustrating to try and do their job while a person is talking on the phone. Another mentioned that, when talking to a friend of theirs on the phone, they could be doing any task at the same time and it does not matter.

The gang agreed that context is definitely important and that, largely, it depends what you’re doing. Hugh brought up the great question of “what happens when nature calls first?”
