5. The Hateful Eight (2015) – stream on Starz/Prime Video

Quentin Tarantino’s claustrophobic Western features an all-star cast, including Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Samuel L. Jackson, and takes place predominantly in a cabin during a blizzard, filled with all sorts of interesting characters. The howling wind and blowing snow outside will really enhance the paranoia-filled mood of this flick, along with the Academy Award winning score by legendary composer Ennio Morricone and, as a bonus, it’s monster run time of 182 minutes will offer maximum shoveling procrastination.

4. Snow Day (2000) – rent on AppleTV

Perhaps, like many radio DJs, you don’t get the luxury of snow days anymore. Well, relive the excitement and magic of a weather-related school closure with this playful comedy that will make you long for the days of essays and math tests. Watching this movie as an adult will also be fun as you get to see future stars like Josh Peck and Emmanuelle Chriqui, as well as performances from comedy icons like Jean Smart and Chris Elliott. And don’t forget a fun role from punk icon Iggy Pop as a tired disc jockey! Can’t relate.

3. The Thing (1982) – stream on Crave

Few horror movies made their mark like John Carpenter’s take on the horror classic the Thing (From Another World). Our second entry on the list that features action movie heavyweight Kurt Russell sees a small team at an Antarctic outpost terrorized by a shape-shifting alien organism that could be any one of them. This one isn’t for the faint of heart, with its still-impressive special effects that will have you wincing, but it goes perfectly with a late night snowstorm. Just hold your dog close and maybe leave the lights on… just in case!

2. Fargo (1996) – stream on Starz/Prime Video

A movie that is made to be watched during winter. Set in the snowy climes of Minnesota and North Dakota, this black comedy from the Coen Brothers will have you laughing, gasping, and looking away from the screen in a span of mere minutes. The headline here is a masterful performance from Frances McDormand, the first of two to earn her an Oscar, as policewoman Marge Gunderson in the midst of solving one of the most bizarre murder cases ever put to celluloid. This is one of my favourite movies but it’s especially effective during the colder months.

1. The Shining (1980) – stream on Crave

What else could it be? There’s just something inherently creepy about a persistent snow storm and, when the cabin fever starts to set in, I say remind yourself of how much worse off you could be. For example, you could be poor Shelley Duval, stuck at the Overlook Hotel with her husband, played by a delightfully deranged Jack Nicholson, and her son, who may be possessed and is talking to his finger?! It doesn’t get much weirder or more blizzard-appropriate than one of the most iconic horror movies ever, filled with iconic moments that have you saying “wtf” even after multiple viewings.

Movie fans woke up to some sad news on Wednesday, as the passing of actor Val Kilmer was announced by his daughter Mercedes. The former Batman and Top Gun star died at age 65 after a bout of pneumonia. In 2014, he was diagnosed with throat cancer, an illness he would eventually overcome. As movie fans, Stephen, Hugh, and Shannell all had fond memories to share of Kilmer’s decades-long career on the big screen.

Besides his role as Iceman in Top Gun, Kilmer was inarguably best known for playing the caped crusader in Batman Forever, alongside Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carrey, and Nicole Kidman. In fact, he was Stephen’s favourite actor to don the cape and cowl. Any time that the Dark Knight is brought up, it is inevitably followed by a debate about which actor has been the best in the role over the years. According to OZFM listeners, 80’s Batman Michael Keaton was a crowd-pleaser and Shannell’s choice, as well as the edgier Christian Bale of Batman Begins. Hugh brought up the late Kevin Conroy, who gave life to Batman in animated features and video games for the better part of three decades.

The world’s leading ticket sales and distribution company says they recently discovered “an unauthorized third party” had accessed a cloud database hosted by a third-party data services provider.

“Based on our investigation to date, we determined that the unauthorized activity occurred between April 2, 2024, and May 18, 2024,” a statement released Monday said. “On May 23, 2024, we determined that some of your personal information may have been affected by the incident. We have not seen any additional unauthorized activity in the cloud database since we began our investigation.”

Ticketmaster has confirmed the affected database contained personal information of customers who bought tickets to events in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.

The company says they have been working with law enforcement, credit card companies and banks since the discovery of the security breach.

Users should monitor their bank accounts for any suspicious activity in the meantime.

Oher also alleges that because of this conservatorship, he was cut out of any profits of the film. His petition states that the Tuohy family negotiated a deal with 20th Century Fox that saw them receive a payment of $225,000 and 2.5% of the film’s net earnings, which would equal over $7.7 Million. Sean Tuohy said in a statement to the Daily Memphian that he was devastated by the allegations in the petition and that his family did not take any money from the film. Oher was a ward of the state of Tennessee as a child and was frequently taken in by the families of classmates at Briarcrest Christian School and he was allegedly told by the Tuohy that he was to be adopted by them.

Casino.ca is accepting applications for someone who is willing to watch and review all 16 animated Barbie movies. The chosen candidate for “Barbie’s Dream Job” will be paid $1,000 plus $50 to go see the new live-action Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. The animated movies were released between 2001 and 2009 and the application form is open until this Sunday.

So, which classic Mattel toys might find their way to theatres? One project we know about is a Polly Pocket movie with Lena Dunham and Lily Collins on board. That one seems like it would fall very much in line with the ‘Barbie’ movie’s sensibilities. Another movie that has been discussed openly is a PG-13 action/heist/comedy movie involving the card game UNO. The UNO film is likely to be set in Atlanta’s hip-hop scene with Lil Yachty targeted for a lead role. Daniel Kaluuya, who you may know from ‘Get Out’ and ‘Nope’ is producing a movie about Barney the Dinosaur. Don’t expect to bring the kids though, indications are that it will be more adult-oriented with “surrealistic” elements that tap into “millennial angst.”

For years, Mattel has been trying to get a Magic 8 Ball movie off the ground, and the success of ‘Barbie’ just might give it life. Ideas have been floated that would make the 8 Ball movie a horror, horror-comedy, adventure movie, or even a rom com, so it’s hard to tell how this one will shake out. There are big hopes for a planned He Man and the Masters of the Universe reboot that some believe could rival the big superhero movies. Reports say that Vin Diesel will likely star in and produce a movie based on the Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots. Mattel has also announced that J.J. Abrams’s production company Bad Robot is developing a “grounded and gritty” film based on the Hot Wheels toy car brand. Other potential toy movies that have been in the rumour mill include Thomas the Tank Engine, American Girl dolls, Matchbox cars, and the View Master, among others.

A real-life version of Barbie’s DreamHouse is now listed on Airbnb. The Malibu, California listing is available July 21st and July 22nd and Ken wrote the listing, claiming Barbie is out of town.

“She has handed over the keys to her Malibu DreamHouse this summer and my room could be yours for the night.” The house contains a disco dance floor, swimming pool, Barbie’s wardrobe, and plenty of pink paint. Book a night starting July 17th.
