Paige

Hi! I’m Paige, I’m originally from PEI and now live in central NL. I spend most of my time playing hockey with the jr. A women’s league here in St. John’s, with rugby on the side whenever I can!

Outside of sports, I love being outdoors. I am especially looking forwards to exploring new places, and taking in everything this beautiful province has to offer. I’m always up for a good laugh, meeting new people, and bring positive energy wherever I go.

I’m super excited to be part of the OZFM family and can’t wait to share the music, fun, and lots of smiles along the way

Hey, I’m Kaelem and I am thrilled to be a member of this year’s OZFM Summer Cruiser Team. I’m originally from British Columbia and moved here to attend university, inspired by a love for trad music and the province’s landscapes.

In addition to my time on the road this summer, I am currently studying philosophy and communications at MUN.

In my free time, I love getting outdoors, whether it’s skateboarding, hiking, or running. I am so excited to get out and see the island with Paige this summer, meeting people and catching amazing views!

The Christmas decorations have probably come down or are about to. Now it’s just winter and, in those moments when the snow is falling and it’s not fit to leave the couch, I say lean in to it. Turn the blizzard into your own personal ambience with the top 5 movies to watch during a snow storm. As you can see, most of these aren’t for the whole family because, let’s face it, parents need a couple hours to themselves after being cooped up in the house all day with the kids. 5. The Hateful Eight (2015) – stream on Starz/Prime Video

Quentin Tarantino’s claustrophobic Western features an all-star cast, including Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Samuel L. Jackson, and takes place predominantly in a cabin during a blizzard, filled with all sorts of interesting characters. The howling wind and blowing snow outside will really enhance the paranoia-filled mood of this flick, along with the Academy Award winning score by legendary composer Ennio Morricone and, as a bonus, it’s monster run time of 182 minutes will offer maximum shoveling procrastination.

 

 

4. Snow Day (2000) – rent on AppleTV

Perhaps, like many radio DJs, you don’t get the luxury of snow days anymore. Well, relive the excitement and magic of a weather-related school closure with this playful comedy that will make you long for the days of essays and math tests. Watching this movie as an adult will also be fun as you get to see future stars like Josh Peck and Emmanuelle Chriqui, as well as performances from comedy icons like Jean Smart and Chris Elliott. And don’t forget a fun role from punk icon Iggy Pop as a tired disc jockey! Can’t relate.

 

 

3. The Thing (1982) – stream on Crave

Few horror movies made their mark like John Carpenter’s take on the horror classic the Thing (From Another World). Our second entry on the list that features action movie heavyweight Kurt Russell sees a small team at an Antarctic outpost terrorized by a shape-shifting alien organism that could be any one of them. This one isn’t for the faint of heart, with its still-impressive special effects that will have you wincing, but it goes perfectly with a late night snowstorm. Just hold your dog close and maybe leave the lights on… just in case!

 

 

2. Fargo (1996) – stream on Starz/Prime Video

A movie that is made to be watched during winter. Set in the snowy climes of Minnesota and North Dakota, this black comedy from the Coen Brothers will have you laughing, gasping, and looking away from the screen in a span of mere minutes. The headline here is a masterful performance from Frances McDormand, the first of two to earn her an Oscar, as policewoman Marge Gunderson in the midst of solving one of the most bizarre murder cases ever put to celluloid. This is one of my favourite movies but it’s especially effective during the colder months.

 

 

1. The Shining (1980) – stream on Crave

What else could it be? There’s just something inherently creepy about a persistent snow storm and, when the cabin fever starts to set in, I say remind yourself of how much worse off you could be. For example, you could be poor Shelley Duval, stuck at the Overlook Hotel with her husband, played by a delightfully deranged Jack Nicholson, and her son, who may be possessed and is talking to his finger?! It doesn’t get much weirder or more blizzard-appropriate than one of the most iconic horror movies ever, filled with iconic moments that have you saying “wtf” even after multiple viewings.

Another young hockey player from this province has made it to the NHL. Ryan Greene, native of Paradise, has signed an entry level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks and has already made his NHL debut. The forward made his team debut for Chicago in the team’s 4-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens with 12:55 of ice time. ESPN reported on April 13th that the Boston University alum had signed his rookie deal with the team, after being drafted in the second round 57th overall in 2022.

The deal comes a day after BU lost the NCAA men’s hockey title to Western Michigan this past Saturday. In 118 games for the Terriers, Greene notched 105 points. He also spent time in the USHL, appearing in 128 games for the Green Bay Gamblers, registering 88 points over that span. The Blackhawks are expected to play Greene again in their final game of the season, tonight at 8:30 against the Senators. The team currently sits near the bottom of the NHL’s standings with 24 wins in 81 games. Greene is the 32nd player from Newfoundland and Labrador to play in the NHL, the first being the recently passed Alex Faulkner, who played 101 games in the big league.

If your kid is a social butterfly, this may be a common issue, or if the party is scheduled at a strange time. A post on a parenting forum from a mom with a scheduling snafu raised the following question; is 9:30am too early for a child’s birthday party? They were asking as the venue of choice only had an available opening at that time. Some respondents said that it was inconvenient timing while others said that the scheduling didn’t make much of a difference and could actually turn out to be a positive. Stephen, Hugh, and Shannell, with zero kids among them, weighed in on this from their childless perspectives on the Monday edition of OZ Mornings.

 

 

OZ listeners had their say on the OZ Line and @947OZFM on social media. Tina said that, in her opinion, a party any time before noon is a no-go, as household chores and prep time need to happen. JJ said that it takes time to get the kiddos ready so, if it’s any time before 12pm, they probably aren’t making it. Another in the 12pm camp, Misty says that 12-2pm is ideal because the kids eat lunch at the party, which means one less thing to worry about.

One way of life can help save an awful lot of money and is extra important while living in such uncertain financial times as these. The other can lead to frustration and sometimes actually spending more money than one intends, like if you end up opting for cheaper, low-quality options that you have to replace more often than something that maybe costs more but lasts longer.

Stephen, Hugh, and Shannell discussed different signs you can tell someone is cheap from personal finance company SoFi and how many applied to them, and also explored who the cheapest person OZFM listeners know is.

 

 

Surprisingly, many folks told on themselves, saying that they were the cheapest person they knew. Others called out family members and may have some explaining to do at the next get-together.
