Newfoundland Broadcasting Mourns Death of Geoffrey Stirling Jr.

The Newfoundland Broadcasting Company is mourning the death of Geoffrey Stirling Jr., the son of CEO Scott Stirling, and the grandson of Geoffrey Stirling, the founder of OZFM, NTV, and The Newfoundland Herald.

“Geoffrey was a loving son, brother, uncle and friend,” said his father, Scott Stirling. “He was a television producer, script writer, actor and model. He attended church every Sunday and supported multiple charities.”

”My family and I are devastated by the loss of my brother,” Lydia McLaughlin, Geoffrey’s sister, said in a statement. “We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support from friends, family, and the community. We kindly ask for privacy as we mourn.”

“On behalf of all the staff at Newfoundland Broadcasting Company, we are heartbroken, and our prayers are with the Stirling family at this time,” General Manager Lindsey Andrews said.

Details of Geoffrey Stirling Jr.’s death in a police officer-involved shooting have been released by the Newport Beach Police Department in California on social media. The matter is now subject to an independent investigation by the California Department of Justice.

Wastewater Surveillance Detects Trace Amounts of Mpox Virus in Newfoundland and Labrador

Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, Chief Medical Officer of Health, will be available to media today, Friday, August 16, at 1:00 p.m. to discuss mpox, which the World Health Organization has declared a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). The media availability will take place at Confederation Building, West Block, Department of Health and Community Services lobby.

Public Health wastewater surveillance has recently detected trace amounts of the mpox virus in Newfoundland and Labrador however, there are no confirmed cases of mpox in the province reported at this time. The detections in the province were not of the same subgroup (clade) of mpox virus that prompted the WHO’s declaration of a PHEIC.

Mpox is usually a mild illness, and most people recover on their own after a few weeks. Symptoms can include fever, chills, rash, muscle and joint pain, and exhaustion, and last for two to four weeks. It is spread through close contact with a person with mpox, and sharing clothing, bedding, or common items that have been in contact with body fluids or sores of a person with mpox.

The Imvamune vaccine is available to eligible individuals who are asymptomatic or who have been in close contact with someone exposed to the virus. Please visit the Department of Health and Community Services website for eligibility criteria. Residents are encouraged to contact their health care provider, 811, or public health if they develop symptoms of mpox or if they have had contact with a person with known or suspected mpox.

Couple Sparks Debate After Selling Tickets to Their Wedding for $333

Nova and Reemo Styles sold tickets to their June 2023 wedding to help recover costs. 60 guests paid $333 apiece to witness the couple tie the knot. Guests received a seat for the ceremony at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a tour to various New York City landmarks, and a steak and lobster reception at the Freedom Tower. The couple saved about $70,000 by charging guests to attend their wedding. However, some commenters called the unconventional move “tacky” and “rude.”

It seems like it’s easier and easier to get distracted in a fast-paced, technology-driven world, but are our attention spans actually getting shorter? According to some studies, yes. In 2004, one experiment measured average attention on a screen to last two and a half minutes. Now, the same method found people’s attention span on one screen to be down to 47 seconds. Being unable to focus on a specific task makes people less productive, not only because they are regularly distracted, but even more so because of the extra time it takes them to re-focus on the task. So, what can we do to increase our attention spans? One tip is to stop trying to multitask. When we try to do more than one thing at once, unless one operation is automatic like walking or chewing, we are actually switching our attention very quickly between the two or more things. You can also try to remove distractions, like removing desktop icons for social media while trying to complete a work or school task. Making a list of things you need to do can help organize your thoughts and accomplish them more efficiently. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is take a break. If you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, a 20-minute walk outdoors can help you reset and re-focus.

Earlier this year, Rihanna performed at the Super Bowl Halftime Show and it became the most-watched halftime show of all time. So, how do you follow up your biggest broadcast ever? That’s the challenge TV producers have in front of them as they try to lock down a headliner for this coming February. Nothing has been made official (and probably won’t be for months), but there are plenty of rumours. Of course, you need to be a household name in order to receive the honours, so it makes sense that four of the names that seem to be circulating the most are some of the biggest artists in the world today. Taylor Swift is in every conversation, so why shouldn’t she be in this one? Miley Cyrus has another massive hit in her back pocket with this year’s ‘Flowers’ and would make a solid choice as well. Harry Styles keeps proving he can do it all, an you know he would pull off an entertaining show, but you just know if he was the choice, all of the talk leading up to the Super Bowl would be whether or not he’d bring his One Direction pals on stage with him. A fourth name people are throwing out there is Adele, but while she’s obviously a phenomenal talent, I’m not sure if she’d be as good of a fit as the others mentioned. What do you think?

Hugh: Who Says ‘I Love You’ First More Often, Men or Women?

An Abertay University study found that across many cultures and countries, men proclaim their love first at the start of a new relationship.

The survey of 3,109 participants found that men say “I love you” about 107 days into a relationship, and women hold out for about 122 days.

On average, men think about saying “I love you” 69 days into a relationship. Participants who were more avoidant were less happy to hear those three little words compared with people who are more anxiously attached.

If you’re a pet owner, you probably care about your furry friend(s) a lot and want to provide the best care you can for them. Of course, providing proper care starts with knowing what you can about the animal and its needs. The problem is that sometimes the wrong information gets out there, and whether you’ve heard about something through a popular saying, like “cats always land on their feet,” or a once-held belief has gone on to be disproven, you may think something is true when it isn’t. A recent poll asked people about the common myths they still believe in and found the most popular ones. In total, 92% of pet owners still fall for myths, so there’s no shame if you’re one of them. The most popular myth seems to be that a dog’s wagging tail signals happiness. In fact, it can reflect a positive or excited mood, but a wagging tail can also signify alertness or interest. Another 38% incorrectly believe that a dog’s nose being cold and wet means the animal is healthy, when a cold and wet nose is commonly a result of the dog recently licking it, done to improve the sense of smell.

When it comes to cats, there are also plenty of myths people take as fact. For example, 42% of people say their feline friends can see in complete darkness, but while cats are able to see in low light, they cannot see in total darkness. Do cats actually always land on their feet? They’re certainly agile, but the old saying doesn’t hold up, despite 41% of cat owners believing it to be true. What to feed cats also seems to be an area of confusion, with 29% of owners saying cats love milk and 30% say cats shouldn’t eat human food. In reality, plenty of cats are lactose intolerant and certain human foods are great for them.
