What is your go to pump-up, feel-happy music?
A new study out of Australia has found that death metal music does not inspire more violence than other genres. According to research conducted in Macquarie University’s music lab under by Professor Bill Thompson, death metal fans are not “desensitized” to violent imagery portrayed in the songs. Specifically, Thompson recruited 32 death metal fans and 48 non-fans to listen to metal or pop music while looking at some pretty unpleasant images. They found that “the fans showed the very same bias towards processing these violent images as those who were not fans of this music.” Thompson also adds, “The dominant emotional response to this music is joy and empowerment.”
