The Oscars adding Popular Movie category, shortening run time

In an attempt to address the 2018 Oscars’ historically low TV ratings, the Academy announced Wednesday it’s planning big changes to next year’s event. A brand-new award category will honor “Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film.” In addition, the Oscars telecast is being trimmed to three hours, with some categories’ winners being presented in the Dolby Theatre during the telecast’s commercial breaks. Board president John Bailey and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson said in a letter these “winning moments will then be edited and aired later in the broadcast.”
