Stephen: Uncle Ben’s to undergo brand makeover to phase out racial stereotypes

Rice maker Uncle Ben’s has announced they will be revamping their image in the wake of recent conversations about race. “Now is the right time to evolve the Uncle Ben’s brand,” parent company Mars said in a statement. The news came just hours after Quaker Oats likewise announced that they’ll retire their 130-year-old Aunt Jemima brand and logo. “Uncle Ben’s” is reportedly named after a black rice farmer, while image of the man on the brand’s packaging is based on a man named Frank Brown, who was beloved Chicago chef and waiter. The names “Uncle Ben” and “Aunt Jemima” have racist roots, as white Southerners often refused to refer to older black people as “Mr.” or “Mrs.,” instead used “uncle” and “aunt” as titles.
