Stephen: UK grocery store asking customers to use “sniff test” to check if milk is expired

Do you follow the expiration dates or your milk cartons, or do give the milk a smell to see if it’s no longer good, or both? A U.K. grocery chain thinks the “sniff test” is good enough, and is getting rid of the expiration dates on its milk. The goal is to reduce the amount of milk that gets thrown out by people because it’s past the expiration date, but that’s actually still good. The milk sold by Morrisons supermarkets will actually still have a date on it, but the wording will be changed to say it will just be “Best Before” that date. Ian Goode of Morrissons said, “We’re taking a bold step today and asking customers to decide whether their milk is still good to drink. Generations before us have always used the sniff test — and I believe we can, too.” Medical News Today says milk is thought to be to safe up to two to five days past the date on the carton.
