Stephen: U-Haul won’t hire smokers in 21 states starting Feb 1

On Thursday, U-Haul announced that it wouldn’t hire smokers in the 21 states where it’s legal to shun prospective employees who use nicotine. The moving company told the AP that its new policy, which takes effect on February 1, won’t apply to past hires and is being implemented in the name of developing a “healthier workforce.” Furthermore, new hires will need to agree to be screened for nicotine use while employed at U-Haul. U-Haul’s maneuver is somewhat unique but not groundbreaking, as Alaska Airlines has had the same policy since 1985.
