Stephen: Starbucks Barista Up to $90K in Online Tips After Mask-Refusing Customer Tried to Shame Him
A San Diego Starbucks barista who was shamed by a mask-refusing customer has raised more than $90,000 in online tips as of Monday morning. According to a recent GoFundMe update, Lenin Gutierrez plans to donate some of the money, but also wants to use the funds to support his goal of becoming a dancer.
However, the woman who shamed Gutierrez, Amber Gilles, told The New York Times she wanted at least half of the donations given to her “because they’re using me to get it. They’re using my name, they’re using my face, and they’re slandering me.” After Gutierrez told Gilles to wear a mask as per Starbucks store policy, the woman left the store in a huff and posted a shaming response and photo of the barista on Facebook. “I didn’t think my little review would get this much attention,” she told the Times.
