Stephen: John Mann, Spirit of the West singer/songwriter, dead at 57
John Mann, lead singer and songwriter for Canadian folk-rock band Spirit of the West, has passed away at the end of 57. The band was popular across the country with such hits as Venice is Sinking and Home For a Rest, and performed in Newfoundland and Labrador a number of times over the years. Mann was 50 when he was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s Disease, revealing it publicly in 2014, though that did not stop him from continuing to tour with the band from coast to coast. Known for clever lyrics and energetic stage performances, Mann was also an actor and it was difficulty remembering lines for an audition that led to the Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
