Stephen: Homeless man returns to college after 4 decades, after alum pays tuition
Thanks to a local student, an elderly homeless man who dropped out of college more than four decades ago will have the chance to finish his degree for free. David Carter began studying art at the University of Texas at Austin in 1971, but dropped out after injuring his hand while intoxicated, Spectrum News 1 reports. He was later diagnosed with schizophrenia and struggled with substance and alcohol abuse. For the past six years, Carter has been panhandling near the school where he met current student Ryan Chandler. Chandler helped him re-apply and a UT Austin alum decided to pay his tuition fees. Carter begins his two courses, U.S. History and Black Political Thought, this Thursday.
