Stephen: Growlers opt out of 2020-21 ECHL season
The Newfoundland Growlers have opted out of the 2020-21 season in accordance with the ECHL’s COVID-19 Voluntary Suspension Policy. The North Division of the league will be sitting out this upcoming season entirely, including the Growlers, Adirondack Thunder, Brampton Beast, Maine Mariners, Reading Royals, and Worcester Railers, and players signed to these teams will become free agents, effective immediately.
In a press release, Dean MacDonald, Chair of Deacon Sports and Entertainment, said “The Growlers and the ECHL along with the PHPA have been working diligently to a safe return to hockey but unfortunately we have reached a point where it just makes sense to shift our focus to the 2021-22 season and the potential rejuvenation of Mile One Centre.”
It is worth noting that the Growlers’ affiliate agreement with the Toronto Maple Leafs expires in May 2021.
