Stephen: Ford government under fire for mandatory math tests for teachers

At the end of the upcoming school year, the Ontario provincial government will require all teachers to complete math exams, a decision that has come under fire. Speaking to CTV, Sam Hammond, president of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario, said “Expecting a kindergarten teacher to have a firm grasp of calculus makes no sense … The proposed teacher candidate test will not increase math outcomes. Testing doesn’t grow confidence, competency or proficiency.” A statement from Ontario Education minister Stephen Lecce said that “Too many students in Ontario are not succeeding in mathematics — a foundational competency that is critical to their success in life and in the labour market.”
