Stephen: Facebook co-founder says social media giant should be broken up

In an incendiary New York Times op-ed, Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes calls current head Mark Zuckerberg’s power “unprecedented and un-American” and declares, “We are a nation with a tradition of reining in monopolies, no matter how well intentioned the leaders of these companies may be. It is time to break up Facebook.” Hughes expresses anger that Zuckerberg’s “focus on growth led him to sacrifice security and civility for clicks,” but also holds himself and other early employees responsible for “not thinking more about how the News Feed algorithm could change our culture, influence elections and empower nationalist leaders.” Hughes then expresses concern that “Mark has surrounded himself with a team that reinforces his beliefs instead of challenging them.” Hughes also appeared on NPR’s Morning Edition and reiterated his stance and concerns.
