Stephen: “Big Papi” David Ortiz shot in Dominican Republic
Former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz is out of surgery and doing “fine” after being shot at a club in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on Sunday. Authorities tell ESPN that Ortiz was ambushed by a man who got off a motorcycle and shot him in the back at nearly point-blank range around 8:50 p.m. local time at the Dial Bar and Lounge. Ortiz’s father Leo says that the bullet did not his any major organs and that his son is expected to make a full recovery. Dominican National Police Director Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte confirms that the gunman was captured and beaten by a crowd of people at the bar. Ortiz played 20 years in the major leagues, and spent 14 seasons in Boston, before retiring in 2016.
