Shannell: Weird Royal Family Christmas Traditions

  • The royal family has three fir trees decorated inside Buckingham Palace and two at Sandringham
  • The Queen will kick off the holidays with a toast and Christmas Eve Martini
  • Gifts are exchanged on Christmas Eve following their afternoon tea
  • They play charades every Christmas Day
  • Christmas Dinner has been as late as 10 p.m.
  • The Queen is the one who reads out the Christmas cracker jokes
  • Royals will not overeat, before and after Christmas dinner they must weigh in by stepping on a scale (a tradition that dates back to the 1900’s)
  • The holidays last until February when the royal family honors the Queen’s father George VI, who died from lung cancer at Sandringham on February 6, 1952.
