A New Zealand couple who thought they had set a new world record for the world’s heaviest potato were ultimately disappointed to find out their “potato” wasn’t actually a potato.
In August 2021 Colin and Donna Craig-Brown unearthed a 17.4 lbs potato (which they named “Dug”) and contacted Guinness World Records thinking the massive spud must count for something.
As part of the verification process Guinness requested a sample of the tater for testing. After sending the sample to Science & Advice for Scottish Agriculture/SASA, it was concluded that Dug was actually a “type of gourd.”
“I’m disappointed, but he’s still ‘Dug – not the biggest potato,'” said Colin Craig-Brown .”It’s been a real roller-coaster of potato-rama. We hopped on the roller-coaster eyes wide open and enjoyed the ride and this was the last real twist.”
Now that he doesn’t have a record setting potato, Craig-Brown says he plans to use Dug to make vodka.
