Robert: “The Simpsons” will no longer have white actors voice characters of colour
Following years of criticism and controversy, The Simpsons have announced they will no longer use white actors to voice characters of colour.
“Moving forward, The Simpsons will no longer have white actors voice nonwhite characters,” the FOX network said in a brief statement.
Popular characters such as Indian store clerk Apu has been voiced by white actor Hank Azaria since the show’s inception. Azaria also voices Carl Carlson, a Black co-worker and friend of Homer Simpson. Likewise, town physician and African-American Dr. Hibbert is currently voiced by Harry Shearer.
Other popular cartoon sitcoms have also announced similar changes.
Voice actor Mike Henry has announced he will no longer voice Cleveland Brown, a Black character from another FOX TV show, Family Guy.
“Persons of color should play characters of color,” Henry said.
