A stray dog in Chatham-Kent, Ontario has become somewhat of a hero after being found protecting five kittens from the cold last week.
The Pet and Wildlife Rescue (P.A.W.) shelter shared pics of the pooch and the litter on their Facebook page on Nov. 16, captioning the post with “stray sweetheart,” was “keeping her ‘babies’ safe.” The shelter explained the dog, named Serenity, was spotted curled up around the kittens on the side of the road, keeping them warm.
Serenity is up for adoption now, but the kittens are still too young and have been placed into foster care.
While many have suggested that the dog and the kittens stay together, the shelter says if they waited for the kittens to be old enough to adopt out with Serenity, the pup would be waiting months to get her “forever family,” and that “it is always the staff’s goal to get dogs out of the shelter environment and into their forever homes as soon as possible.”
