In a press conference held earlier today, Premier Andrew Furey, flagged by Deputy Premier Siobhan Coady and Health Minister John Haggie, announced that all public servants must be fully vaccinated by December 17th. Agencies, Boards and Commissions will also be subjected to this new mandate.
In addition, those working within vulnerable populations, including long-term and personal-care homes, schools and child-care providers, and employees of businesses where the NLVaxPass app is required, will be expected to be fully vaccinated by the same December date.
To those who are hired on or following this deadline will have to be fully vaccinated by their job’s start date.
The new provincial mandate considers an individual to be fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving the second dose on a recognized COVID-19 vaccine. One dose in the case of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
The new policy does not apply to those who have an approved medical excemption.
Today, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador provided details of its Mandatory Vaccination Policy that applies to public service employees in core provincial government departments, as well as agencies, boards and commissions. The policy is being implemented in an effort to ensure continued safety in the workplace, as well as to ensure additional health protection for all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
By December 17, 2021, all provincial government employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have an approved medical exemption. In addition, all new hires on or after December 17, 2021 are required to be fully vaccinated at the time of their employment start date.
The Provincial Government and agencies, boards and commissions will take the necessary steps to ensure the policy also extends to any vendor, supplier, contractor or volunteer who regularly works alongside public service employees during normal business hours.
Government will also be mandating COVID-19 vaccines for some employers beyond the core public service to come into effect on December 17, 2021. Places where employees and volunteers will have to be vaccinated include:
