Spring is here, (technically) and many are eager to get the yard back in shape after the long winter season. But before you fire up the lawnmower, the NL Beekeeping Association is encouraging you to hold off for a little while.

The organization, who say they are the¬†voice of beekeepers and beekeeping industry of Newfoundland & Labrador, has launched an awareness campaign called #NoMowMay as a way to encourage those allow dandelions and other early flowering plants to bloom, giving the province’s bee population a chance to do their thing.

“Dandelion is the most important food source for honey bees, and native pollinators after a long winter,” reads the Association’s website. “We’re encouraging people to not mow their lawns for the entire month of May. This simple gesture will provide necessary food for the bees, and important habitat for pollinators and other wildlife.”

To help drum up support, the NLBKA will be offering up prizes to those who participate and share the message via social media.
