Robert: Microsoft interested in buying TikTok
Tech giant Microsoft is in advanced talks to buy the U.S. operations of the popular video app TikTok according to a person familiar with the discussions but chose to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity to the negotiations.
TikTok issued a statement Friday saying that, “While we do not comment on rumours or speculation, we are confident in the long-term success of TikTok.”
TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, launched the social media app in 2017. The app quickly became popular for it’s goofy, easy to make videos. It has said it has tens of millions of U.S. users and hundreds of millions globally.
Recently the app’s Chinese ownership has raised concerns over censorship of videos, including those critical of the Chinese government, and the potential for sharing user data with Chinese officials.
Microsoft has declined to comment about the potential sale.
