In a surprise media availability today, Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, announced that masking will no longer required in K-12 schools in the province as of May 24th.

Citing the declining number of hospitalizations and new COVID-19 cases in Newfoundland and Labrador as of late, Dr. J. Fitz says the decision is based on our recent epidemiology and discussions with the Department of Education and school boards.

While masking will no longer be required is schools as of the 24th of the month, Dr. Fitzgerald still recommends the wearing of masks at school as a form of protection from COVID, and stressed the importance of vaccinations as our greatest tool against COVID-19.

In addition, the CMoH also announced changes to how the province will report information relating to COVID-19. In the near future, numbers relating to COVID-19 in Newfoundland and Labrador will be updated on a weekly basis, down from 3 times a week currently.
