Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the garden..

An invasive species of earthworm have begun showing up in the state of California.

The Asian jumping worm is a close relative of the common crawler you find in your flower bed. What sets them apart is their insatiable appetite and ability to jump a foot in the air.

Native to East Asia, particularly Japan and the Korean Peninsula, the worms have been spotted in Canada, travelling as far east as New Brunswick. Due to their never-ending hunger, jumping worms can quickly consume the top layer of organic material, making it difficult for plants to remain rooted and allowing nutrients to be washed away by rain.

They are considered to be an invasive species and it is recommended that any encounters with the worm be reported to wildlife authorities.
