Do not dare call the follicle-ly challenged “bald”.
A panel of judges in Sheffield, England have ruled that calling a man ‘bald’ is sexual harassment. All three judges, themselves dealing with a lack of hair, concluded using the world “bald” can be considered a form of discrimination, citing how baldness is more prevalent among men than women and likening describing a man as “bald” to commenting on the size of a women’s breasts.
The ruling comes after an electrician claimed to be the victim of sexual harassment at work after being let go from his job. The man says the incident that took place in 2019 when a disagreement between the man resulted in a physical confrontation and name-calling. Words used in the exchange included the word, “bald”.
“We have little doubt that being referred to in this pejorative manner was unwanted conduct as far as [Mr Finn] was concerned. This is strong language crossed the line by making remarks personal to the claimant about his appearance,” the judgement reads. “There is a connection between the word ‘bald’ on the one hand and the protected characteristic of sex on the other.”
The defendant in this case was compensated for his trauma.
