Robert: J.J. Abrams returning to a galaxy far, far away
Last week, Lucasfilm, the crew behind Star Wars, announced that Episode IX Colin Trevorrrow was leaving the project, leaving the yet to be titled installment of the space epic without a director. Today, it was announced that a familiar face was returning to a galaxy far, far away to man the helm.
J.J. Abrams will return to the franchise to take over writing and directing duties on the upcoming film. “With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement. Abrams previously co-wrote, co-produced and directed Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which went on to gross over $2 billion worldwide.
Star Wars: Episode IX is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 24, 2019. Meanwhile, Episode VIII: The Last Jedi premieres on December 15.
