Robin Williams really wanted to be a part of the Harry Potter franchise. Unfortunately, he was the wrong nationality.

Director Chris Columbus, who helmed the first two Potter films, has revealed that Williams had approached him to play the character of Professor Remus Lupin, but producers had no interest in casting a non-British actor.

“I had a conversation with Robin Williams, who wanted to play Lupin,” Columbus said. “It was very difficult for me to say ‘It’s all British. There’s nothing I can do.’”

Williams briefly touched on the subject during a 2001 interview.

“There were a couple of parts I would have wanted to play, but there was a ban on [using] American actors,” he said. “Maybe one day. Say if [Harry] goes to Yale and becomes president.”

David Thewlis would later go on to play the Lupin character.
