Robert: Former homeless Edmonton artist hired by Marvel Comics
Five years ago, Kyle Charles was living on the streets of Edmonton. Today he’s illustrating for Marvel Comics.
“It was hard work. It was dedication,” Charles says. “It was just staying true to the path I was on.”
Charles will be one of the artists involved in Marvel’s Voices: Indigenous Voices #1, a comic focusing on a team of superheroes from Indigenous backgrounds.
“We’ve seen a lot of stories with Indigenous characters or Indigenous stories, but a lot of the time, they’re not told by Indigenous people.”
Charles is hoping his story inspires other youth in similar situations.
“You can come from an impoverished background, inner-city Indigenous youth, and fight your way out of it,” he said. “You can absolutely fight your way out of it.”
You can get Marvel’s Voices: Indigenous Voices at your local comic shop.
