While a partridge in a pear tree is synonymous with the holiday season, a snake in a Christmas tree is not.

Wildlife rescuers in South Africa were to a home recently to extract a venomous boomslang snake from the family’s tree.

Gerrie Heyns, owner of reptile rescue service Snake Lives Matter, says he arrived at the home about 90 minutes after the family first discovered the reptile among the branches. From there, Heyns was able to extract the serpent using specialized tongs.

Once safely removed from the home, the snake was released back into the wild.

Heyns notes this is the first time he has ever been called to remove a snake from a Christmas tree.
