Robert: City of St. John’s ends MOU with Newfoundland Growlers/St. John’s Edge
The City of St. John’s has terminated a memorandum of understanding in place between themselves and the Newfoundland Growlers and St. John’s Edge.
The MOU was signed in March of 2018, which included the possibility of the owners of the Growlers and Edge taking over the management of Mile One Centre and the St. John’s Convention Centre.
A management proposal from Deacon Investments Ltd and Atlantic Sports Enterprises Ltd. was provided to City Council and St. John’s Sport and Entertainment, but it was rejected over a disagreement regarding the annual operating subsidy. The proposal asked for subsidy amounts, which the City provides to SJSE, to remain at 2018 levels, while both the City and SJSE want to see those levels reduced to ease the burden of Mile One and the Convention Centre on taxpayers.
Dean MacDonald, owner of the Growlers, says he plans on taking legal action against this latest development, while SJSE say they are open to negotiating long-term lease agreements with both teams for the upcoming season.
