Robert: Barbie introduces dolls with physical disabilities
Toy company Mattel will be launching a new line of Barbie dolls later this year that will include characters with prosthetic limbs and wheelchairs.
In a news release, Mattel explained the decision, saying it wants to broaden the definition of what it means to be beautiful. “As a brand, we can elevate the conversation around physical disabilities by including them into our fashion doll line to further showcase a multi-dimensional view of beauty and fashion.”
A doll with a wheelchair accessory has been one of the most requested items by fans. The upcoming doll will have an articulated body that easily fits in the chair. Other dolls within the Made to Move line will also be able to be used the wheelchair.
