Hugh: 2020 Emmy Nominees Announced

The 2020 Emmy nominations were announced Tuesday, with Netflix walking away the big winner. CNBC reports that the platform racked up a record 160 nods, more than any other platform or network. Other, newer platforms made their own marks: Among the notable nods this year were The Morning Show and The Mandalorian, which earned the first-ever Emmy nominations for their respective Disney+ and AppleTV+. While The Mandalorian is up for Outstanding Drama Series, The Morning Show was overlooked in that category, but did nab an Outstanding Actress nod for Lead Actress Jennifer Aniston. Speaking of The Morning Show, co-star Reese Witherspoon was triply snubbed, failing to get a nomination for her role in that series or for HBO’s Big Little Lies or Hulu’s Little Fires Everywhere. (Her Little Fires co-star, Kerry Washington, was nominated, as were Big Little Lies‘ Laura Dern and Meryl Streep.) Netflix’s record-setting number of nominations came from a slew of shows, including Ozark, The Crown, Unbelievable, Unorthodox, Nailed It, Dead to Me, and The Kominsky Method. HBO came in second with 107 nods, including 26 for its limited series Watchmen, the most of any TV show this year. Amazon’s Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was in close second behind Watchmen, earning 20 nods. Tuesday’s nominations were announced by host Leslie Jones with help from Orange Is the New Black‘s Laverne Cox, Josh Gad and Orphan Black and Perry Mason star Tatiana Maslany; their livestreamed announcement unfortunately featured more than its fair share of awkward moments as Jones spoke from a studio to Gad, Maslany and Cox via videoconference. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the 2020 Emmys will take place on September 20 and will air live from L.A. starting at 8 p.m. on ABC.
