Hugh & Shannell: Will Smith Working on Rebooting Fresh Prince as a Drama
Will Smith is reportedly developing a reboot of his classic ’90s sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but this time as a dramatic series not a comedy, UPI reports. The newly imagined series is simply called Bel-Air, and was the brainchild of Morgan Cooper, who created and directed a viral video in March 2019 that showed the comedy series as a drama taking place in modern times. Will Smith saw the video, and praised it on his own YouTube channel, and then came on board to executive produce. Cooper is set to write a pilot script with The Wire veteran Chris Collins, and the show will be produced by Smith’s production company Westbrook Studios and the producers of the original series, Universal TV. The show is being pitched to multiple streaming services. The original show ran from 1990 to 1996 on NBC, and is currently streaming on HBO Max.
