This morning, Premier Andrew Furey held a press conference to address the growing wildfires in the central part of Newfoundland. As of Saturday night, a state of emergency was declared in central NL as a precaution. Today an update was given and the fire ban already in place for many areas has been expanded to the entire province of Newfoundland and Labrador. When asked about possible evacuation of people in affected parts of the province, Furey says evacuation is not mandatory at this time, but residents should be prepared should the need arise. With shifting winds and growing fires, the concern right now seems to be smoke impacting towns rather than the flames actually reaching those areas. Premier Furey also mentioned that for those with respiratory issues, now may be a good time to relocate.
