Hugh: NHL Commissioner Bettman has Asked to Move Hockey to the Summer Olympics

We don’t usually associate hockey with the summer (because, you know, ice) but maybe we should. During the broadcast for the NHL’s 2022 Winter Classic outdoor game between the St. Louis Blues and the Minnesota Wild, the league’s Commissioner Gary Bettman said that he’s been asking to have ice hockey moved from the Winter Olympic Games to the Summer Games. Bettman says he’s been asking for the change since the 1990’s, but so far the International Olympic Committee has been firmly against it. At first it seems like a silly idea, but moving the event into the summer months would mean that it wouldn’t interfere with the NHL season, which has caused problems between the players and the owners before. Of course, NHL player’s won’t be going to this year’s Winter Games, so including the sport in the 2024 Summer Olympics would mean several players who were disappointed by not going next month could have another chance closer in the future. For what it’s worth, hockey made its Olympic debut at the 1920 Summer Games before switching to the winter.
